How to deal with a crush in the workplace
Workplace crushes are a completely normal and common occurrence. The fact that the majority of employees spend 40+ hours with the same group of people in a workplace means it easy for feelings to develop for your colleagues.
Although, there are no laws and policies to deter employees from pursuing the affections of a work colleague, many are deterred from doing so because they believe it will affect their reputation as a professional.
Others are distracted from doing so because they are so either because they believe their crush is unobtainable or they are worried about how it will affect the chemistry in the workplace.
However, this does not stop romantic feelings towards work colleagues from emerging and often they can damage an employee’s productivity. Some may even struggle to complete simple tasks like moving the office furniture without being distracted by the thought of their workplace crush.
This article offers five tips for how to stop a crush ruining your productivity levels.
1. Ask them out on a date
This is only recommended if they are obtainable. Obtainable in this situation would mean not in a relationship and not in a direct working relationship with you, for instance your boss or your employee.
If they are obtainable, asking them out as soon as possible will stop the weeks and months of wondering ‘what if?’ instead of getting your work done.
2. Find reasons to hate them
For those who are unobtainable, the best way to kill the crush is to create reasons to why it wouldn’t work between you. Make a list of things you don’t like about them. After all, nobody’s perfect.
3. Find another object of affection
The chances are the only reason you’re developing this crush is because there’s nobody else on your radar. Sure, this person may by far the best piece of eye candy in the office but probability suggests there’s likely to be a million over people out there better suited for you than them.
Go out and socialise more or, failing that, join a dating website.
4. Increase your workload
Another reason you’re probably daydreaming about your crush so much is that you have the time do so. Ask your boss for an extra task to get on with, preferably in a department far away from your love interest.
5. Change jobs
This might be the most extreme option, but if your skills are high in demand and pursuing your love interest will leave you either sacked, dumped or sued for sexual harassment, then it might just be easier to change jobs. Hopefully realising how stupid that sounds will help you go get over it.
Workplace crushes can be awkward situations to get over – but with the help of these tips they can be eliminated before things get really messy.
