Choosing A Chopping Board

Cutting boards have become an essential tool on everybody’s kitchen-from aiding the food preparation as chopping platforms to serving the finished meal on the table. It even often double as a protective trivet or ‘hot pad’ on food presentations.

Cutting boards are usually made of hardwoods but a new generation of boards has emerged over the past few years, which is made of various substances that each has its own advantage and disadvantages.

Below are some types of chopping boards available in the market today:

Wooden Boards

There are generally two types of wooden chopping boards- end grain and flat grain. Wood is very attractive and will look good in any kitchen. What’s good about wooden chopping board is the fact that no matter how many times you use it, it tends to mature over time and will look good for many years. There are three types of wood commonly used for chopping boards namely Beech, Have, and Maple.

  • End grain boards are made up of many rectangular batons or squares of wood bonded together under high pressure. Slicing across the grain then creates the board that leads to attractive boards, which won’t wrap, is durable, and kind to your knife-edge.
  • Flat grain boards are commonly made up of larger sections of wood with the grain, as the name implies, is lying flat. A board is usually made up of three or four sections of wood that have lovely grain structure.

Glass Boards

Glass boards are usually known as “work surface protectors”, which reflects their best use. Glass boards are designed to be placed on your work surface. In order to protect it from heat, mess, and cutting, most glass boards is fitted non-slip with rubber feet to prevent them from sliding on the work surface.

It is low maintenance and can be placed on the dishwasher. But since glass is very hard, repeated cutting on a glass board can cause your knives to dull faster as opposed to wood or plastic.

Plastic Boards

Plastic boards are cheap, durable, and hygienic. They are very handy to use and store because they are often thinner and lighter than glass or wooden board. It is also kind to knife and will keep it sharp.
