A guide to kitchen worktops
So you have chosen your kitchen, whether it’s an ultra modern statement or a more understated blend of classic features. Perhaps the most important feature of your new kitchen will be the worktop – defining how you use and interact with your kitchen on a daily basis as well as being a style feature.
It is important to bear in mind when choosing kitchen worktops, what sort of culinary pursuits you enjoy. Do you enjoy cooking up a storm or do you prefer to cook more convenient meals on a short timescale? Whatever your activity, it is vital that your worktop is waterproof, heat and stain resistant.
Granite and silestone worktops offer a contemporary, high quality finish to your chosen kitchen. Coming in a variety of colours, granite can add shine to any style of kitchen – be it modern or traditional. Granite is the toughest of all worktop materials, being scratch and heat proof as well as virtually indestructible – always a good feature in a family kitchen. In addition, granite can be pre cut to any design you require, making it the best material for a quality bespoke kitchen.
Wood offers a mellow and natural alternative, fitting in with a more traditional style of kitchen. It contains anti-bacterial properties and is easy to repair if you do have an accident. Wood comes in a range of shades to suit all tastes but does need to be oiled at least once a year to prevent it drying out and isn’t as waterproof as its granite counterparts.
Stainless steel worktops are opted for by all the top chefs, as they are hygienic, waterproof and heat resistant. However, they are prone to scratching, so do use a chopping board if you want to create this industrial, streamlined look in your kitchen. Stainless steel is a relatively value for money material so you can save those pennies for any hi-tech gadgets you have your eye on.
